Production Makeup

Real-World Industry Demands

From 2004 to 2006, Joe Blasco authored what is widely regarded as the world’s most comprehensive encyclopedic textbook on the art of makeup—a monumental work spanning more than 2,000 pages. This definitive text covers not only beauty makeup, but every phase of the profession, including special makeup effects, character creation, and advanced production techniques.

This section of the website highlights the highly intricate effects that attendees will also learn firsthand when participating in our professional production makeup seminars. These seminars are designed to translate deep theoretical knowledge into practical, hands-on expertise.

Although CGI and other computerized, digitally generated effects have replaced some traditional makeup work once performed by artists of the past, many hands-on special makeup effects processes continue to thrive within modern production environments. These enduring techniques remain essential to achieving realism, texture, and physical presence on screen.

The surviving practical arts form the foundation of each production makeup seminar. No time is spent teaching outdated techniques that have been fully replaced by computerization. Instead, attendees are taught only the most current, intricate, and detailed methods still actively employed in professional production today.

SEVERAL OF THE GIANTS OFTHE SPECIAL MAKEUP EFFECTS PROFESSION WILL BE BROUGHT IN AS GUESTS TO TEACH MANY OF THESE SEMINARS. MOST OF THESE AWARD WINNING ARTISTS WERE GRADUATES FROM MR. BLASCO‘S ORIGINAL MAKEUP SCHOOLS IN HOLLYWOOD AND ORLANDO FLORIDA.

Instruction includes advanced techniques in character makeup, monster makeup, injury simulation, gore and horror effects, prosthetic fabrication, and prosthetic application, ensuring students receive focused training aligned with real-world industry demands.

Professional Interest

You can now greatly benefit professionally from seeing and hearing master artists explain the artistry and innovation behind special makeup effects.

These seminars explore not only the history and evolution of special makeup effects through the ages, but also clearly explain and demonstrate how these techniques are executed in today’s new era of high-resolution digital film and television imaging.

The advent of highly sophisticated, high-resolution film and television processes—including HD and beyond—has required significant changes in how makeup artists apply their work. These seminars address those changes directly, offering practical insight into modern application methods that meet the demanding standards of contemporary digital production.

Classic Makeup Techniques

However, many classic makeup techniques remain highly effective today because they have been thoughtfully adapted to meet the demanding requirements of modern digital production. These time-tested methods, refined for contemporary use, continue to play a vital role in professional makeup artistry.

These techniques will be taught by Mr. Joe Blasco and his staff of special makeup guest lecturers, who will skillfully demonstrate each process with clarity and precision. Through detailed, hands-on instruction, attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of intricate makeup effects and their practical application.

Each special makeup effect is covered in a dedicated eight-hour day. When necessary, seminars may extend beyond the scheduled timeframe at no additional charge, ensuring that all techniques are thoroughly demonstrated and fully understood.

Featuring...

Each of the special makeup effects categories listed above is offered as a one-day session lasting approximately five to eight hours.

Hands-on work sessions, either supervised or unsupervised, may be made available when reserved and prepaid, provided the attendance level reaches fourteen participants or more.

Pricing for the seminars varies depending on the prominence and reputation of the artists hired as lecturers. The baseline price for all production seminars is $975 per day; however, certain seminars may be priced higher depending on the lecturer selected.

An optional practice day may be added if desired. Supervised practice sessions are available at $50 per hour with a five-hour minimum, while unsupervised practice sessions (space rental only) are available at $15 per hour, also with a five-hour minimum.

These special makeup seminars are only offered when attendance exceeds 10 to 12 individuals. Each seminar will be scheduled only after confirmation that the required minimum number of attendees has been reached. Once confirmed, all already registered seminar attendees will be notified of the scheduled date and time.

Registration reservations for each seminar begin three months prior to the proposed start date. Once a seminar reaches its attendance quota, all registered and prepaid attendees will be notified, and the official start date will be announced on our website.

With sufficient credit approval, attendees may be eligible for a convenient payment plan consisting of a 50% deposit upon registration and the remaining 50% due one week prior to the confirmed commencement date. Eligibility for this plan must be discussed directly with the seminar coordinator.

On occasion, when announced, Joe Blasco and his associates—and/or one or more presiding or guest lecturers—may conduct field trips to events or facilities of interest related to special makeup effects. Attendees are responsible for all expenses associated with these field trips. JBMS will make every effort to reduce entrance fees to any events or attractions selected as part of a beneficial field trip seminar.
